CIMA Organization

  • The Community Meeting includes everyone who has done CM.

  • The General Circle is at the very center:
    - Leaders of 4 circles and their delegates
    - Aim: Ensure circles have what they need to function and that all aims and domains are clear. Always know what gets decided where.
    - GC only “decides who decides”
    - GC cannot override a circle's decision

  • The Mission Circle
Safeguards that all CIMA activities are aligned with the overall mission, vision, and CIMA principles and values.

  • 3 Key Circles:

  • - Organization Development (OD) Circle
    - Training Circle
    - Project Circle

  • Within each key circle, sub-circles can be defined according to the principles and processes of each key circle.

  • Circle Aim and Domain – General Principles

  • A circle is a self-governing and semi-autonomous working group of equivalent people who collaborate to make decisions within a domain (typically 4-8 members).

  • - Domain: The area in which the circle makes decisions without needing approval from others.
    - Aim: A description of what the circle does.

  • The aim and domain come as a package: responsibility and authority are given together so that those doing the work have the authority to act.

  • Roles:
    - Leader: Oversees operations and ensures the circle works towards its aim.
    - Facilitator: Moderates the meetings.
    - Coordinator (“secretary” in sociocracy): Takes notes during meetings and maintains up-to-date circle documents.
    - Delegate: Represents the circle’s voice in the next-higher circle.
    - Guardians (1 or 2): Facilitate the circle's connection to generative principles.

  • Example of Communication Flow
    1. Circles meet to define their purpose and organization (in one or several meetings if needed).
    2. Representatives (usually the Delegate +1) meet together with all circle representatives in the General Circle:
       - Overview of the status of each circle
       - Feedback collection
       - New ideas and tasks

  • 3. Circles can meet again if needed to review decisions.
    4. Communication of status quo/decisions to the CIMA Extended Community:
       - Overview of the status of each circle
       - Feedback collection
       - New ideas and tasks

  • 5. Circles review the information collected and make adjustments to decisions, if needed.
